The church of Ye aka Kanye West has just lost its tax-exempt status because its forever-embattled founder, on top of all of his other problems, has reportedly not been filing his taxes.
According to the U.S. Sun, Ye’s Sunday Service has lost its federal tax-exempt status after the Vultures 2 rapper failed to file his returns for three consecutive years.
The 47-year-old launched the invite-only musical event that first featured his Sunday Service choir in January 2019, in promotion of his album that dropped that year, Jesus Is King. Since then, the choir has performed with the troubled Hip-Hop icon at Coachella, the Hollywood Bowl and other prestigious venues. In December 2021, Sunday Service was granted charity status, which essentially made it a church that didn’t legally have to pay taxes. But, again, that exemption doesn’t extend to its founder, which is why, according to the IRS website, the service’s tax-exempt status was revoked on May 15, 2024.
Both the Sun and the IRS noted that the “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” artist hasn’t had much to do with Sunday Service as of late, and that the choir, which is led by director Jason White, has pretty much been running itself. It’s kind of a shame, actually, since, not too long ago, the Yeezy creator was so passionate about Sunday Service and how much he had invested into it.
From the Sun:
West claimed in an interview with Nick Cannon in 2020 that he spent $50 million on Sunday Services in its first year.
“I spent every dime that I have for marketing from Yeezy on Sunday Service. Every dollar I had,” he said.
“I spent $50 million last year on Sunday Service if you add up the operas, if you add up the flights. It was 120 people going to Jamaica.
“The Yeezys, they were selling themselves. So instead of paying for ads, I invested it in the church. I invested in spreading [the] gospel. I invested in saying Jesus’ name on high.”
But these days, Ye can’t seem to roll out of bed in the morning without falling into controversy, albeit, largely self-inflicted controversy. From his antisemitic comments to his inappropriate displays of pornography in professional environments, Ye has burned bridges with adidas and other brands he was previously partnered with, and now he’s on the wrong side of the IRS.
Seriously, where does it stop?
