Making conversation on a first date can be hard. We get it. But there’s one question you should absolutely despise and avoid at all costs: “Why are you single?”
There’s really no winning answer and a terrible first date question.
Depending on who’s asking, almost every response can put you into one of two boxes. You’re either bitter and lonely, or you’re out here “hoe-ing it up.” Even the classic response, “I haven’t found the right guy/girl yet,” can sound cliché, corny or, frankly, unbelievable.
And then there’s the unintended consequence: The question can send you spiraling back to the person who got away or dredge up negative feelings from past relationships. Who wants to spend a first date talking about their ex, or defending why they don’t currently have a partner?
There has to be a better way.
With cuffing season approaching, our writers at Cassius decided to ask friends, both IRL and on social media, what they actually wanted to be asked on a first date. The responses were plentiful, but one thing became clear: A successful first date isn’t necessarily about determining whether there will be a second date, or whether you’re going to hook up.
It’s about creating a vibe.
Did the conversation flow? Did you laugh? Did you learn something? Did you get a little deeper than small talk? Most importantly, did you enjoy being present with the person sitting across from you?
With that in mind, we put together a list of questions that can help keep the conversation moving without making your date feel like they’re sitting through a rapid-fire job interview. Whether you’re looking for a relationship, a second date or simply a good time with someone interesting, these questions can help you learn more about the person without killing the vibe.
1. Do You Like What You Do?
Work takes up a huge chunk of most people’s lives, so finding out whether someone actually enjoys what they do can tell you a lot.
Are they passionate about their career? Dreaming about doing something completely different? Happy with where they are, or working toward something bigger?
You’re not conducting a career assessment. You’re simply getting a glimpse into what motivates them, and whether they feel fulfilled by the life they’re building.
2. What Podcasts Do You Listen To?
This is an easy way to learn what someone is curious about and a fun first date question.
Their favorite podcasts can reveal everything from their sense of humor and interests to the issues they care about. And if they don’t listen to podcasts, no big deal. Tell them about a few of your favorites and see where the conversation goes.
The real question is whether you discover something you both genuinely enjoy talking about.
3. What Would Make This an Amazing Night?
Leave sex and anything involving spending a ridiculous amount of money off the table for this one.
Instead, ask what would make the person feel like they had an incredible night. Maybe it’s discovering a great new restaurant, dancing, seeing live music, finding a hidden bar or simply having a hilarious conversation that lasts until closing time.
It’s a great way to learn what makes someone feel connected and have fun together without worrying about whether you’re doing everything “right.”
4. Where Did You Grow Up?
Keep this one conversational rather than investigative.
Share a little about your own childhood first, then ask about theirs. Where someone grew up can open the door to conversations about family, siblings, culture, neighborhoods, school, traditions and experiences that shaped them.
You might discover that you have more in common than you expected—or learn about a completely different world.
5. What’s Your Favorite Vacation You’ve Ever Taken?
Travel questions are really lifestyle questions in disguise.
Does this person love adventure or prefer a quiet beach? Are they all about exploring new cities, or is their idea of paradise a hotel room, room service and absolutely no plans?
Their answer can give you a glimpse into how they like to spend their time, money and free days, and maybe even inspire a future date.
6. Which Political Issue Is Most Important to You Right Now?
This might sound heavy for a first date, but compatibility isn’t always about music, food and favorite TV shows.
If politics and social issues are important to you, it’s worth knowing whether your values are fundamentally compatible. You don’t necessarily need to turn the date into a political debate. The goal is simply to understand what matters to the person sitting across from you.
And if you already know certain values are non-negotiable for you, finding out sooner rather than later can save everyone time.
7. What Are You Looking For?
This one is a must, but timing matters.
You don’t necessarily need to open the date with, “So, are you looking for marriage?” Give yourselves a chance to actually meet each other first.
Later in the date, asking what someone is looking for can provide clarity without creating unnecessary pressure. Maybe they’re dating casually. Maybe they’re hoping for something serious. Maybe they don’t know yet.
Whatever the answer, knowing where someone stands can prevent a lot of confusion later.
8. What’s Your Favorite Childhood Memory?
This question can take the conversation somewhere much more personal without getting overly serious.
Maybe it’s a family vacation, a birthday, a favorite teacher, playing outside with friends or something completely random that still makes them smile.
It can also lead naturally into a deeper question: Would you want to recreate that experience with your own family someday?
That answer can tell you a lot about someone’s relationship with their past, and the future they imagine for themselves. These kinds of questions invite meaningful conversation and help reveal someone’s personality beyond surface-level small talk.
9. What’s Your Biggest Fear?
This one is definitely a little deeper, so read the room.
You don’t have to turn the date into a therapy session. But learning what someone is afraid of can reveal what they value. Is it failure? Losing loved ones? Being alone? Not reaching their potential?
The answer can give you a glimpse beneath the surface and create an opportunity for a genuinely meaningful conversation.
10. What Always Makes You Laugh?
Everybody likes to laugh, but what someone finds funny can tell you a surprising amount about their personality.
Are they into dark humor, silly videos, stand-up comedy, reality TV or ridiculous stories from their friends?
Bonus: If you can make each other laugh during the conversation, that’s probably a good sign.
11. What’s Something You’ve Always Wanted to Try?
This question is perfect for finding out whether someone has a bucket list, or whether they’re perfectly content going with the flow.
Maybe they’ve always wanted to learn another language, take a dance class, travel somewhere new or start a completely different hobby.
You might even discover an easy idea for a future date.
12. What’s Something You’re Really Proud Of?
This question gives someone an opportunity to talk about themselves without asking the dreaded, “So, tell me about yourself.”
It could be a career accomplishment, raising a child, overcoming something difficult, completing a personal goal or simply becoming a better version of themselves.
More importantly, you’ll learn what they consider worth celebrating.
13. What’s Your Ideal Weekend?
This is a low-pressure way to learn what someone’s everyday lifestyle looks like.
Are they sleeping until noon and ordering takeout? At brunch by 10 a.m.? Hiking? Going to church? Hosting friends? Watching football all day?
Sometimes compatibility comes down to the little things. If your perfect Saturday looks completely different from theirs, that’s useful information to have.
14. What’s One Thing You’re Trying to Get Better At?
Nobody has everything figured out.
This question can reveal whether someone is reflective and open to growth, or completely convinced they’re already perfect.
Their answers could be serious, funny or surprisingly vulnerable. Either way, it gives you something more interesting to talk about than the usual first-date small talk.
15. What’s Something You Want People to Understand About You?
Now we’re getting somewhere.
This question gives your date a chance to share something that might not come up naturally in conversation. Maybe there’s something about their personality, background, career, family or experiences that they wish people understood better.
And if they’re comfortable enough to give you a real answer, you’ve probably moved beyond the basic first-date script.
The best first-date questions aren’t necessarily the deepest ones. They’re the questions that make someone want to keep talking.
You don’t need to run through this list like you’re conducting an interview. Pick one, listen to the answer and follow the conversation wherever it naturally goes.
Because ultimately, the goal of a first date isn’t to collect as much information as possible. It’s to figure out whether you enjoy being around each other. And that’s a much better question than “Why are you single?”
